Tim Howard

April 20th, 2009 by admin

American goalie Tim Howard saved two shots against his former team, leading Everton to a 4-2 shootout victory over Manchester United and its first FA Cup final in 14 years.

After the teams played to an 0-0 draw, Howard stopped Dimitar Berbatov and Rio Ferdinand at Wembley. Everton will face Chelsea in the May 30 final at the home of English soccer, the Blues having beaten Arsenal 2-1 on Saturday, also at Wembley. Everton beat Man United 1-0 in the 1995 FA Cup final.

Howard, who played at United between 2003-06, also ended his former team’s bid to win an unprecedented five trophies in one season.

Having already won the FIFA Club World Cup and domestic League Cup, Manchester United is trying to defend the Premier League and Champions League titles. Manager Alex Ferguson, whose team faces Portsmouth in the league on Wednesday, left out many of his front line stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

Backup goalkeeper Ben Foster made a diving save on Everton’s Tim Cahill in the second half of the semifinal and Ferguson left his seat to wave his arms in fury when his team wasn’t awarded a penalty for a push by Phil Jagielka on Danny Welbeck.

In Sunday’s Premier League games, Darren Bent’s goal gave Tottenham a 1-0 victory over next-to-last Newcastle to push the Magpies closer to relegation and Robinho scored his first in 12 games in Manchester City’s 4-2 triumph over last place West Bromwich Albion.

Breast Cancer Prevention

April 19th, 2009 by admin

Despite all the ‘noise’ about breast cancer being one of the worst killers of women in the world today, it is annoying that most women still do not take active steps towards protecting themselves from this dreaded condition. Although, the increasing prevalence of breast cancer and perhaps other cancerous conditions has been linked to environmental factors such as the increasing levels of radiation and chemicals released into the air, water, soil and food that we consume in the civilized world; or to genetic and hereditary factors, the role of other self imposed factors cannot be ignored.

There are a lot of things every woman can do individually or collectively, to prevent breast cancer. Poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, lack of exercise or ingestion or hormone mimicking medications, all play crucial roles in the cause of breast cancer and any attempt at preventing this disease should begin from here.

A simple positive and optimistic attitude has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer. This will sound amazing to many people; however, it will suffice to explain that several medical studies have demonstrated the link between a positive attitude and an improved immune system. Laughter and humor has been shown to enhance the body’s immunity and prevents against cancer and other diseases. You must have heard the slogan ‘happy people don’t fall sick’. Part of maintaining a positive attitude is learning to express your feelings. The mind is free and open and energy flows freely throughout the body when there are no accumulated pains and anxieties weighing you down.

Exercise is another tool that you will find very useful in your fight against breast cancer. Aerobic exercises, at least 3-4 times a week, constant breath work and deep body awareness (as in yoga meditation) are all effective in preventing breast cancer. Exercise has been shown to be very effective in maintaining a healthy body and mind. By exercising regularly, you will do yourself a great favour, because you will not only be preventing breast cancer, you will also be making it easier to maintain a sound mind and healthy body.

Most genetically modified foods (GMO) i.e. food materials that were enhanced in the laboratory, are known to pose serious health dangers to consumers. Also, the hormone mimicking substances in contraceptive pills and other prescription pills could predispose you to cancerous growth. Thus, taking the right supplements could also be an effective tool in the fight against breast cancer.

Madonna injured in horse tumble

April 19th, 2009 by admin

Pop star Madonna has suffered “minor injuries” and bruises after falling from a startled horse on New York’s Long Island on Saturday.

According to her spokeswoman, the 50-year-old singer fell when her horse was “startled by paparazzi who jumped out of the bushes” to photograph her.

Madonna was treated at a hospital in Southampton and was later released.

A previous horse-riding accident in 2005 left her with three cracked ribs, a broken collarbone and a broken hand.

She got back on a horse a couple of months later for an appearance on David Letterman’s US talk show.

Helmet

Madonna was visiting friends in the Hamptons when the accident occurred, her spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg said in a statement.

The singer would be having further tests and remained under observation by doctors, she added.

According to a local newspaper report, Madonna had been performing jumps and wearing a helmet when the accident occurred.

The entertainer recently returned from Malawi after her bid to adopt a second child from the country, three-year-old Chifundo James, failed.

Her lawyer has lodged an appeal against the judge’s ruling

Nato foils Somali pirates’ attack

April 19th, 2009 by admin

An attempted attack by Somali pirates on a Norwegian tanker was foiled by Nato warships and helicopters after an overnight pursuit in the Gulf of Aden.

Nato said a Canadian warship caught the pirates before releasing them after the gang attacked the MV Front Ardenne.

The alliance said the pirates had been released because they could not be prosecuted under Canadian law.

On Saturday, Dutch commandos serving with the Nato anti-piracy operation freed 20 pirate captives from Yemen.

In that incident, too, the raiders were released.

American forces joined in Sunday’s pursuit of pirates who used rocket-propelled grenades in an attack on the 80,000-tonne MV Front Ardenne.

Portuguese Lt Cdr Alexandre Santos Fernandes told AP news agency the raiders only stopped after repeated warning shots were fired.

He said the gang was interrogated and disarmed before being released.

A spokesman aboard the Canadian warship, the Winnipeg, Michael McWhinnie, said they had switched off all lights to hunt the fleeing pirates through the night.

“We blocked their path. We were faster and surprisingly more manoeuvrable than the pirate skiff,” Mr McWhinnie told Reuters news agency.

Pirates have intensified attacks on shipping in recent weeks in one of the world’s busiest sea lanes, despite patrols by the foreign navies.

In another incident on Saturday, Somali pirates seized a Belgian ship and its 10 crew, including seven Europeans.

Nato’s success this weekend is the latest in a string of recent Western military operations against the pirates.

French and US troops have both taken action against pirates in recent days.

The French rescued three people from a captured yacht in an assault which saw one man killed.

Last week US troops killed three pirates and captured another as they rescued the American captain of a tanker from captivity.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently unveiled a plan to tackle piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean off Somalia.
